Derrick S. Reed

October 6th 1969 - November 8th 2022

"Keep yourselves in God's love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life."

Jude 1:21

Derrick was born on October 6th, 1969, to his parents Edward and Pamela Reed. He was the brother of Darin, Damon, Kristen, Adam, Amy, and Alex; the father of Skylar, Tanner, Brendon, and Baylor; And the grandfather of seven beautiful grandchildren. Derrick loved his family over all else. From sponsoring them in a variety of sports events and birthday parties, to pizza and times at the arcade; he was always there for them.

Derrick graduated from Seaman High School in 1988 and went on to take over a few of the family's historic restaurants. In 1998, he took over Buddy's Hamburgers from his parents where he and his children would spend time together doing what he truly loved, serving people. Later, he and his brother Damon went on to purchase two sports restaurants and called them by the family name, Reed's. After success in the bar industry Derrick felt he was being called back to his first love, the fast-food industry. In 2011 he would purchase his beloved family burger restaurant established in 1975, Horizon's Hamburger Palace in Oakland and would later purchase a second location on the west side of town. In Derrick's final days we saw the spark of passion for the restaurant industry reignite as he was only weeks away from re-opening our beloved Buddy's Hamburgers.

He was an avid lover of animals. As a child he would bring home pockets of rollie-pollies and cared for hamsters, dogs, cats and even a squirrel that he had nurtured from infancy later in life. Derrick had a heart for the innocent.

He cared for the small things many often overlooked.

"The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." - Matthew 25:40 NIV

Derrick was a man that The Lord God had blessed with a passion for the work of his own hands, and a steward of the gift of giving. There was something special he had been blessed with; a warmness, a joy that had been kindled and burned faithfully within the depths of his heart - this his calling in life. A man who put-to-plow and moved forward so that he could give as much as he was able to those around him, including the homeless and the needy: not out of obligation, but from the warmth of his heart.

He was a provider

Derrick was a huge sports fan and would often be seen watching football or boxing on television. He absolutely loved watching the Dallas Cowboys with his boys on Sundays while preparing some delicious family staples to eat. Through the inspiration and coaching of his brother Damon, he began what would eventually become a successful boxing career with over 20 professional bouts. Derrick became a fan favorite locally along with his brother Damon and loved sharing those experiences with his family.

November 8th 2022, Derrick was laid to rest at the age of 53; but the fire, these God given gifts, continue to burn in the hearts of those whose lives he has touched
