Darlene F. Rice, 92, died at Brookside Retirement Community in Overbrook, Kansas on March 12, 2018. She was born July 4, 1925 in Lebo, KS and graduated from Lebo High School as salutatorian of her class. After high school, she attended nursing school and worked in the nursing field until marrying Louis F. Rice December 14, 1947 at the First Methodist Church in Topeka, KS. They soon started a family and she worked from the home raising their children. Darlene spent much of her life caring for others. She was actively involved in her church and also served as a Girl Scout leader. She shared a love of music and storytelling with her husband and family. When she wasn't caring for children with school and activities, she enjoyed reading, poetry, jigsaw puzzles, and solitaire games of all varieties. She also enjoyed sewing and crafting and enjoyed birds. Children and grandchildren alike fondly remember her famous fried eggplant from the garden, homemade ice cream, the old Chiefs drive-in movies, and trips to the library. She saw the best in everyone and always had a positive outlook in life. She is survived by her son, Glenn Rice (Linda) of San Diego, CA; daughter, Terri Perez (Andrew) of Topeka, KS; daughter, Anna Seele (Danny) of Burlingame, KS; daughter, Raymola Mowery (Charles) of Carbondale, KS; 18 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, and brother, Noel Bowlin of Kansas City, Mo. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence Glen Bowlin and Fern Lucille Watkinson Bowlin; her husband Louis Rice; daughters, Brenda Halstead and Linda Behymer; sons, Galen Rice and Michael Rice; two grandchildren, sisters Betty Dowell and Carol Rahberg, and brother Richard Bowlin. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on March 23, 2018 at Church of Christian Fellowship, 430 Commercial Street, Carbondale, KS. Interment will follow at the Buffalo Cemetery, in Buffalo, KS. Memorial contributions can be made to Great Lakes Caring Hospice, 1420 Wakarusa Dr., Suite #202, Lawrence, KS 66049.
