Connie Marie Shepard

Connie Marie Shepard, 71, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2026, in Topeka.

Connie was born in Lawrence to Stanley Leroy Shepard Sr. and Esther May (Rodger’s) Shepard. She was preceded in death by her mother, Esther May (Rodgers) Shepard; her sister, Rachel Shepard; her brother, Stanley Leroy Shepard Jr.; her niece, Thi-Wan Shepard and her nephew Josen Shepard.

She is survived by her loving daughters, Esther S. (Dorsey) Tubbs and husband Johnny Tubbs, and Hymethia D.J. Washington; her cherished granddaughter, Alia L. Bermudez; and her beloved grandson, James H. McClurkin, along with many nieces, nephews and extended family and dear friends who will miss her deeply.

Connie attended University of Kansas, where she continued developing the independent spirit that would define much of her life. She was truly a free spirit—someone who never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone. Connie was known for her generous heart and willingness to help others, often giving freely of herself and whatever she had. She loved spending time with friends, sharing laughter, and living life on her own terms.

To her family, Connie was remembered as a fun-loving mother and grandmother whose presence brought moments of joy, humor, and warmth. Her family will remember her for her vibrant spirit, her kindness, and the love that connected them through the years.

Connie’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
