Christopher Michael "Chris" Woolery, born on February 25, 1946, in Bethesda, Maryland, passed away on August 25, 2023, in Topeka, Kansas. Chris was a man of many talents, interests, and accomplishments. He was a treasured brother, stepfather, grandfather and friend whose vibrant life and unwavering individuality left a lasting impression on all that knew him.
Chris was born at the Bethesda Naval Hospital, the first son of Vane and Barbara Woolery, both in the Navy at the time of his birth. Survivors include brothers Evan Woolery (Gayle), Mark Woolery, long-time companion and friend, Jeanine Thill, stepdaughters, Alexis Thill and Amanda Danielson (Lan). Shared moments of laughter, struggles, love and companionship with his family and his beloved granddaughter's, Zoey and Zariah, were a cornerstone of Chris's life.
Chris's employment history was as diverse and interesting as he was. He began his career as a Boiler and Condenser Mechanic at the Southern California Edison Generating Station in Redondo Beach, CA. His time as a fireman on a naval ship in Vietnam further honed his practical skills and resilience. He also worked as a lumberjack while attending the University of Humboldt. These experiences not only shaped his professional path but also nurtured his natural problem-solving abilities and developed his unique MacGyver" style approach to challenges.
After attending the University of Humboldt earning his Bachelor's degree in 1974, he pursued a law degree at the University of Washburn Law School, graduating in 1980. Chris was a respected criminal lawyer and served the State of Kansas Public Defenders office with dedication and integrity, retiring in 2022.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Chris was a man of many passions. He was an avid motorcyclist. Many a day could be found in his garage, tinkering with just about anything, working on his bikes or attending to his lawn and garden. His love for learning and problem-solving was never more evident than in these moments of hands-on work.
Chris also had a deep love for reading and was a dedicated news enthusiast. He often watched multiple news stations simultaneously while listening to NPR, always eager to stay informed and broaden his knowledge. He carried this love of learning into his interactions with others, never missing an opportunity to turn a simple event into a learning experience.
Chris marched to the beat of his own drum, exercising his individuality and sense of self in every aspect of his life. He was unapologetically himself, living life large and on his own terms. His unique perspective and bold spirit will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
In remembering Chris, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by passion, intellect, and individuality. His memory will continue to inspire and influence those who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those he leaves behind. As Chris would often say as he ended his phone calls and we lovingly now repeat, "Chris Woolery, over and out."
A Celebration of Life will be held on October 20th at the Celtic Fox located at 118 SW 8th Ave (upper level) from 4:30-6:30. Come bid farewell to Christopher Michael Woolery, and honor his unyielding spirit, his love for learning, and his unwavering commitment to living life on his own terms.
