Cherie Mae (Anderson) Mitchell passed away peacefully of September 23rd, 2023 at the age of 85, at the Brookside Retirement Home in Overbrook Kansas.
A celebration of life will be held at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Lecompton, Kansas on Saturday November 25th, 2023 at 11am.
Cherie was born on June 10th, 1938 to Loyal Milton Anderson and Ruby Evelyn (Krause) Anderson, on the Anderson farm outside of Bison, South Dakota. Her family moved to California in the early 1940's. She attended Manteca High School where she met her high school sweetheart, Leonard Mitchell. They were married on November 7th, 1955.
Cherie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Family was her greatest treasure. She also enjoyed flower gardening and had a love for animals. Cherie was an amazing cook. She loved a good card game and was a superior 3 spot wild partner. Cherie held several jobs while she took care of her family. The last few jobs were with the Osage Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Osage City, Kansas where she worked as head cook for 10 years and housekeeping supervisor for 11 years. Then, when Scott Averill purchased Atria Hearthstone East in Topeka, Kansas, he requested that Cherie come and set up the housekeeping department there. When she felt she had the department organized she retired.
Cherie was preceded in death; by her father Loyal Anderson (1967), her mother Ruby (Krause) Anderson (2001), twin sisters, Jean Loyal (Stewart) Anderson (1987), Judy Ann (Keller) Anderson (1991), and her husband of 67 years, Leonard Mitchell (2022)
Cherie is survived by her three children: Michael L. (wife Betty), of Lecompton, Kansas, David L. Mitchell of Lawrence, Kansas, and Rhonda K. Johnston (husband Robert) of Oakdale, California. Her eleven grandchildren: Travis (wife Summer) of AZ, Della Dee Burns of CO, Buck Simmons (wife Kristin) of NE, Jessica Stonehocker (husband Anthony) of CA, Jennifer Ruda (husband Frank) of FL, Shantal Nickel (husband Leo) of KS, Mikhail Crawford (wife Kimberly) of UT, Dr. Trevor Mitchell, of MO, Melissa Weisgerber (husband Paul), Lance Mitchell (wife Ellie), Gavin Mitchell (wife Ashlyn) all of KS., her thirty-two great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Cherie is also survived by two nieces: Marcey Jean (Stewart) Groves of Napa, CA and Kimberly Ann Madsen of Coalinga, CA. Both loved their aunt Cherie dearly.
