Cecilia Evans Clement

March 3, 1928 — July 31, 2019

Cecilia Evans Clement, 91, passed away July 20th at the Ascension Via Christi hospital in Manhattan, KS with much of her family by her side.  Chronic heart failure and pneumonia caught up with her.

Cecilia, also known as Sheila, was the eldest daughter of James Carey Evans and Madeleine Bigger.  She was born in Buffalo, NY on March 3, 1928 and grew up there and in East Aurora, NY.

She graduated from the Park School in Buffalo and attended Colorado College; eventually she obtained a degree in Anthropology from Northeastern University in Boston, MA while living in Concord, MA.   She married Laurence (Larry) Allen Clement in June of 1948 and lived in Italy and France after WWII; raised the family in Concord, MA, then lived in West Chesterfield, NH, Newtown Square and Cochranville, PA for many years; and moved to Manhattan, KS in 2003.

Sheila is survived by her three children: James Carey Evans Clement (East Aurora, NY), Laurence (Lorn) Allen Clement, Jr (his wife Lynn M. Ewanow), and Cecilia (Cela) Clement Hennessy and one granddaughter Cecilia (Lia) Lauren Hennessy (all living in MHK).  She is also survived by her sisters Madeleine Maldanado (Concord, MA) and Jane Meyer (Half Moon Bay, CA).  Cecilia was predeceased by her husband Larry.

Sheila was an accomplished hooked rug artist, creating original rugs for family, friends and clients for thirty years; many of these were displayed at the Volland Store in Wabaunsee County in 2017 during an exhibit of her work.   She was an avid reader and she was passionate about opera.   She loved conversation, dogs, skiing and sailing.

There will be a memorial service in mid-October, 2019, in Manhattan, KS.  Sheila and Larry will be interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo, NY.
