Carroll Griffin Mccarty

December 17, 1946 — February 24, 2025

Carroll Griffin McCarty died February 24, 2025, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka, KS. She was born Dec. 17, 1946, in Emporia, KS, to Myrl and Jessie Griffin of Burlington, KS. She attended the Burlington schools and then entered Emporia State University, majoring in Special Education. During her senior year she married Stephen McCarty. Following graduation, they moved to Florida, where he was stationed at the Pensacola Air Base.

In 1968, she was involved in an auto accident caused by a drunk driver that left her in a coma with traumatic brain injuries. Three days after the accident she gave birth to a son. When her condition stabilized, she was transferred to a Topeka hospital where she regained consciousness, 3 months after the accident.

Carroll entered rehab programs in New York and California with no real improvement. Eventually a patterning exercise program was started for her in her parents' home. Family members handled the weekend patterning and were so grateful for the many Burlington and Coffey County residents who handled the weekday patterning. This program probably gave Carroll the most benefit, but unfortunately, she was unable to ever live independently again. Her sister Sharon served as her guardian and conservator for the remainder of Carroll's life.

Carroll was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Jan Griffin, her nephew, Jeffrey Cox, and her brother-in-law, Ron Warman, Sr. She is survived by her son, Jon Scott McCarty, two grandsons, her sister, Sharon Griffin Warman of Topeka, her nephew Robert Cox and his wife, Tamara Boman, of Blue Springs, MO, and a great-niece and three great-nephews.

Final arrangements will be handled by Midwest Cremation of Topeka. No formal memorial service will be held.
