Bernadine Joanne Stewart

Bernadine Joanne Stewart, known affectionately to all as Bernie, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family in her hometown of Topeka Kansas, due to pneumonia. Just shy of 92, Bernie's vibrant spirit left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her.

Bernie was a graduate of Topeka High School then sashayed her way through the halls of Washburn University, turning heads and taking names. Her beauty and interests were as eclectic as her wardrobe, which was the epitome of style and fashion.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, William Ray Stewart. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Stephanie Rae Stewart, who with her husband Elliott Mencken Brackett, gave Bernie the joy of being a grandmother to Stewart Brayden Brackett and Bria Rae Brackett. Bernie cherished her role as 'Grandma Bernie', and she never missed an opportunity to share their achievements and adventures. Family was her greatest joy, and she embraced every moment with warmth and grace.

Bernie's love for modeling and sense of fashion was not only about looking good but feeling good, and she used her flair for stylish clothing to inspire confidence.

An animal lover, Bernie's affection for dogs was as much a part of her life as her family and friends. She believed in the unconditional love and companionship that dogs provide, and her furry friends were a constant source of joy and comfort throughout her life.

Bernie's enthusiasm for dance exercise kept her active and healthy well into her later years and helped her maintain her physical fitness but also her social connections. Her presence in these classes were a testament to her belief in the importance of staying active and engaged with life at every age.

She took her final bow in Topeka, Kansas, leaving us all with a lifetime of cherished moments, and a wardrobe that will undoubtedly be the talk of the afterlife. Farewell, sweet Bernie, your journey here is done. But know this; your memory will be as everlasting.
