Benita Arlene Essary, affectionately known as "Bee" and "Auntie Ben", passed away peacefully on November 3, 2024, at the age of 97 in Topeka, KS. Born on October 18, 1927, in Rock Creek Township, now referred to as Eskridge, KS, Benita lived in many places across the country before returning home to Kansas. Her spirit was characterized by her loving nature, her kindness, sense of humor and her creativity depicted in her beautiful paintings.
Benita's journey began as the daughter of Clayton and Esther Bell Overman, and she grew up surrounded by her three brothers, Richard, Darrell, and Lynne, and her three sisters, Dorisbel, Betty, and JoAnn, all of whom predeceased her. She married George Essary, on August 16, 1956. He also preceded her in death. Together, they raised their son, Ronald.
A woman of determination and grace, Benita accomplished much through her life. She earned her GED while living in California. She continued her education by attending beauty school. Her career as a beautician allowed her to touch the lives of countless individuals, enhancing their outer beauty while nurturing their inner spirits. Benita also dedicated time to work at SafeWay, where she was known for her warm smile and caring demeanor.
Benita was a self-taught artist with a remarkable talent for painting. Her artwork, often depicting the beautiful places she had visited and kept alive in her memory, was a source of joy not only for her but also for those fortunate enough to receive her hand-painted cards on their birthdays. Her creativity knew no bounds, and her art will remain a cherished legacy among her family and friends.
Benita's garden was another canvas for her creativity, where she cultivated beautiful flowers. She found immense pleasure in delivering bouquets from her garden to family and friends brightening their days with her thoughtful gestures. This love of nurturing was a common thread throughout her life, as she continuously looked for ways to care for others through her acts of kindness.
Those who knew Benita will remember her as the epitome of love and kindness. She made friends easily and was well thought of amongst others. Benita's life was a testament to the power of love, the importance of family, and the impact one person can have on the world around them.
Benita's legacy will live on through her devoted son, Ronald, her caring daughter-in-law, Patti, her six grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and the countless lives she touched with her warmth and generosity. Her absence will be deeply felt, but her spirit will continue to guide and inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her.
A celebration of Benita's life will be held at 3:00 on Saturday, November 23rd at Wanamaker Road Baptist Church, 2700 SW Wanamaker Road, Topeka, KS.
