Barbara Jean Metzger passed away October 21, 2024, at Homestead Assisted Living of Topeka.
Barbara was born to Stephen Smith and Ruth Royer Smith on April 13, 1932. She is survived by three daughters, Merry Magill (Ray), Melody Pollom (Alan), and Holly Anderson. She is also survived by nieces and nephews Stephanie Cook, Stephen Smith III, Kris Denton, Patrick Smith, Karla McFarland, Carl McFarland, and Steve McFarland. Preceding her in death were her husband Robert "Bob" Metzger, daughters Gay Anderson (Danny) and Heidi Ostrander, sister Betty McFarland, niece Wendy McFarland, and brother Stephen Smith II. She had 10 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
Barbara attended Seaman High School, where she met and married Bob. While homemaking and raising her five daughters, she helped supply Indian Creek Elementary School with library books through a borrowing program from the State Lending Library. She and Bob led their daughters' group of Camp Fire Girls, a program that was deeply rewarding for all involved. She was also active in the Civil Rights Movement, serving on local committees in the 1960s and '70s.
With her children grown, Barbara went on to manage her father's business, Steve Smith Audio Visual, and pursue her personal interests. She loved reading books, singing and dancing — both by herself and with any child who was willing — horseback riding (preferably in Colorado) and antique hunting (mostly Akro Agate), and she gardened her entire life. She loved her husband, the home they designed and built, her family, and her friends.
Barbara spent her last years at Homestead Assisted Living of Topeka, where she'll be remembered as one who would not let residents or staff pass her in the halls without stopping for a greeting, and as one who had to dance in her walker on her way to meals and activities where music was frequently playing.
Family and friends are invited to bring memories and photos to share during a gathering at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 2, at Seaman Community Church, 2036 NW Tyler, Topeka, KS 66608.
