Antonio "Tony" Martinez Cortez passed away in his home on Tuesday, March 3rd surrounded by family. Born September 30, 1913, Tony was 101 years old. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Louise Muñoz Cortez, and his children: daughter Lupè Williams and husband Robert; son Richard Cortez and wife Kim; daughter Connie Barb and husband Larry; daughter Nancy Vannocker and husband Wade; daughter Linda Harris and husband James. Their many grandchildren and great-grandchildren include: Ryan Cortez and his daughter Isabella; Crystal Karmann, husband Josh, and their children Makaila, Michael, and Raven; Nicole Cortez; Michael O'Shel; AJ Blankenship; Natalia Barb and husband Matt; Anthony McAuley, fiancé Tracy and their children Hunter, Beau, and Chase; Brandon Barb and Danica White; James Harris Jr. and Ashley Sparkman; Kristina McAuley; Erica Rosencutter, husband Jacob, and their children Adison and Grace; and Shane Vannocker.
Tony came to the United States from Mexico as a young man and devoted his life to building his own American dream. He worked hard, taught himself to read and write, and became an American citizen. At a young age he picked cotton to support his mother; later, he fed cattle for Anderson Feedlot and worked on slaughter side at IBP. He took joy in building a house for his wife and children with his own hands, a place his family will always call home. Tony's greatest pride was his children. He taught them that doing it the hard way is most often the right way, the value of education, and the importance of family. A stern and loving father, Tony cherished and spoiled his grandchildren. He loved dogs, sometimes too much; his were always fat from too many treats. Throughout his life, Tony illustrated his values by living them, and built a foundation upon which his family could grow and prosper, each generation's lives better than the last. For his example, generosity, and love, for the many years with him they were given, his family is forever grateful.
The family would like to thank all those who have offered their help and comfort in this difficult time. Cremation is planned and a private memorial service for Tony will be held at a later date. For those wishing to make memorial contributions, the family requests a donation be made to a local charity benefiting animals.
