Alan D. Smith, 77, of Topeka, passed away Friday, January 30th, 2026. He was born October 2nd, 1948, in Lacrosse, Wisconsin, the son of Waldo and Lottie (Kupp) Smith. Alan grew up with a strong work ethic and a generous spirit. He graduated from Hayden High School in 1966, served in the US Marine Corps Reserve and soon began his lifelong career with Hallmark Cards, where he worked until his retirement. On November 16, 1968, he married the love of his life, Karen Rae, at Assumption Church in Topeka. Together they built a family rooted in love, faith, and laughter.

Alan is survived by his children, Amy Smith of Grove, OK, and Derek and Joseph Smith of Topeka; his grandchildren Rachael, Mason, Devin, Ashton, Daniel, and Eileen; and his great-grandchildren Lillyanne, Ryker, Joseph, Madison, Daniel, Elana, and Lincoln. He is also survived by his sisters Lorreta and Marilyn and his brother Mickey.

A deeply devoted and devout Christian, Alan served as a church deacon for many years and read from his Bible daily, sharing its teachings with those around him. Alan was happiest when creating, building, or fixing something, and he never hesitated to help others with their projects, too. He loved making people smile, always ready with a joke or a lighthearted comment. He and Karen shared a passion for country-western dancing and spent many years teaching others to dance. He enjoyed softball and basketball and proudly coached his children’s teams throughout their youth. Alan leaves behind a legacy of kindness, craftsmanship, faith, and humor; gifts he shared freely with everyone he met.

Alan was cremated. A memorial ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 10th at Community Church at 1819 W 21st Street in Topeka. The family will meet friends for half an hour before the service at the church. Private interment will be at West Lawn Memorial Gardens in Topeka.
